Hello! I’m a homeschooling newbie so to speak. My 14 year old daughter suffers from anxiety. Her anxiety is mainly school related which is why I am now homeschooling her. However, she still sometimes gets anxiety just at the thought of doing her daily assignments. She is going to a wonderful cottage school for 90 min classes just twice a week and then is supposed to complete the assignments during her time at home. She’s extremely smart and has no problem with understanding the curriculum; she just hates school! So I’m wanting to add some fun to it and she’s very interested in getting into acting but every local acting opportunity I have found is always only for musicals and she is not a singer. She also doesn’t just want to be an “extra” in the background because she would quickly get bored with that; especially with her ADD. We live about 30 min. NE of Indianapolis in Anderson, IN. I suffer from multiple sclerosis and often can’t get out so I have to rely on my mom to take her places for me so I need something local. Do you know of any acting opportunities in my area or do you have any other suggestions for something I could do to help my daughter enjoy homeschool more? Her other interests are:
-writing short stories
-she absolutely LOVES making funny videos with friends and desperately wants to be a vlogger
-she just shared with me that she would love to become a missionary one day
Thank u from the bottom of my heart for your help!
Sincerely,
Helplessly lost homeschooling momma- Brooke
Hi Brooke!
You don’t sound helplessly lost at all…you sound like you and your daughter are working hard to make good things happen in your homeschooling experience.
I don’t have any connection to folks in your area, but I guess I would first suggest leaning into her complementary gifts and interests — writing and making videos/vlogs. It might be challenging and fun to write some monologues and then record them as videos. If you feel comfortable with it, she could start a YouTube channel and share the videos either publicly or unlisted where only friends with whom she shares the link could view.
What would you recommend as the minimum age for the drama camp?
I have done two different types of camps, and the one that works best for me is for ages 12-18 (approximately). I have also done “junior” camps for ages 8-15, and that group just needs a less demanding schedule with a little more relaxed approach; maintaining focus is tougher for the younger kids.
home schooling a high school boy who has Aspergers and lives in nashville tenn. part of the time and western ky. the other part of the time. Are there face to face coaches you know of in these areas? Thanks so much, Judy
I checked with a friend in Nashville, and she gave me these names. I don’t have personal experience with any of them, so I’m just passing along info, not offering a personal endorsement. Hope this helps!
