Homeschoolers, I believe, are going to be culture influencers when they grow up. In order to prepare them, we should teach them to think and write creatively and clearly.

They will need to cover 4 components in homeschool high school writing, and each has a different purpose:

  1. Research papers show that students can mine for and digest information, choose good sources, and communicate well, and follow prescribed formats
  2. Essays show that students can use critical thinking skills, develop ideas and themes, and write concisely
  3. Short stories develop creativity and fortitude that will be needed in college and life
  4. Poetry develops creative word use that is necessary for engaging communication success

That’s a lot to cover, and each component should be covered each year!

However, it is not necessary to overwhelm a teen with busywork and unneeded intensity. Writing assignments should for the most part be:

  • interesting
  • inspirational
  • useful/relevant
  • fun or engaging (at least sometimes)
  • not any longer than necessary

Creativity is necessary for excellence in all writing formats. Once homeschooling high schoolers graduate, they will need to be able to communicate in ways that interest employers, Sunday school classes, ministries, or any other place God puts them.

Those who are heading for college will be competing for good grades on papers. If they have creativity in their use of thoughts and words, they can produce papers that are interesting to read (as opposed to 200 other drably-written papers that a professor might read).

Homeschoolers can develop confidence in their creativity skills by having some fun with their writing assignments. Introductory Guide to High School Short Story Writing: Family Narrative is a 23-page writing guide, written  to encourage your student to capture their creativity by sharing a family story.

Students then learn to thing in creative story form by taking on:

  • Character development
  • Storyline
  • Sparkling conversation
  • Creative word order
