This study guide, by Vicki Tillman, covers a sampling of British poets. It includes background information and answer key.
Excerpt:
In this unit, we will look at some great British poetry. Now, there is no way that we can look at ALL of British poetry. You can do that in college. We are going to look at some of the more popular and easy to understand poems.
We will be looking at works by: George Herbert, William Cowper, William Blake, Gerard Manley Hopkins Rudyard Kipling, Percy Bysshe, Shelley, Robert Browning, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rosetti, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Sir Walter Scott, William Butler Yeats, Lewis Carroll, and Robert Burns
Sample questions:
“The Altar”
After you read “The Altar” answer these questions: 1. When I read this poem, it talks to me about making a broken heart an altar (place of sacrifice) for God, remembering Christ’s sacrifice. If I choose to praise God despite the broken heart, it becomes a sacrifice of praise. Can you see what I see? What do you see in the poem? (Write a sentence or two.)
2. What shape do you see in the poem? Does it make the poem more effective, in your opinion, to have the poem be in a shape rather than just in a traditional poem form?
